DJ Purple (the duke of House): Sample Mixes

Mixed Blessings

"Gospel lyrics set to House rhythms -- Gospel House Music"

Not only was I born and raised in Chicago but also in church (First Church of Deliverance, to be exact). I remember receiving 'unofficial' piano/organ lessons from my babysitter when I was 3 years of age; my appreciation for Gospel music would later become instinctual.

In my mind's eye, the first person to really establish a contemporary dance genre of Gospel was Tramaine Hawkins with "Fall Down". This was in 1985, the year I began high school. Years later (in 1991) Gospel would get another 'shot in the arm' with the Sounds of Blackness releasing "The Pressure Pt 1"; the EP release had 2 Sound Factory mixes by Frankie Knuckles, the Godfather of House. In 1992 I was introduced to a cassette released on Myx Records titled "A Myx'd Trip to a Gospel House". At that time I had no idea of the potential impact of these recordings.

In 1997 I began to notice that there were a few records in my House collection that were Gospel-based. I decided to record a 90-min. mix tape with these types of records. I would do this 3 more times over the next 4 years, and "Mixed Blessings" was one such tape. That mix was recorded in 2000 but did not become a CD until a year later, by request of DJ Free-T, owner of Gospelhousemusic.com. This is the only web site dedicated solely to Gospel House music.

Shouts out to the following: First Church of Deliverance, Kim English, DJ Free-T(GHM), Farley "Jackmaster" Funk, Edward "Get Down" Crosby!
